Future Fuels Fund - ARENA

The Future Fuels Fund is an ongoing program developed to enable the demonstration and deployment of new zero emissions vehicle technologies.”

Background to the Future Fuels Fund

Announced in 2020, the Future Fuels Fund was initially a $71.9 million fund to support public charging infrastructure for battery electric vehicles, as well as hydrogen and biofuel technologies.

Australian Renewable Energy Agency (ARENA) awarded $24.55 million under the Future Fuels Fund (Round 1) to support the roll-out of 403 public electric vehicle fast charging stations nationwide.

In 2021, the Australian Government expanded the Fund with a further $177.7 million, bringing the total to nearly $250 million, to increase the roll-out of enabling infrastructure in Australia.

The expanded fund includes support for business fleets, new technologies for heavy and long-distance vehicles, public charging and hydrogen refuelling stations. It also aims to incentivise household smart chargers to boost the reliability of local electricity networks.

How it works

The Future Fuels Program has been developed under the Future Fuels Fund to enable the demonstration and deployment of new zero emissions vehicle technologies. The Program is ongoing involving two stages: 1) Expressions of Interest and 2) Full Application stage.

The government will assess applications on how well they contribute to the Program objectives and align with the following Program Focus Areas:

  1. Support the integration of battery electric vehicles into light vehicle fleets
  2. Support the integration of battery electric vehicles into heavy vehicle fleets
  3. Commercialise hydrogen as a transport fuel.

The Program Focus Areas are in place until December 2022 and will be updated periodically. Applications are expected to be assessed every two months (depending on applications received).

There will be an information session hosted by ARENA on Monday, 7 March 2022 from 2:00 PM to 3:00 PM, which will include information about the Program and an opportunity to ask questions – register your interest

The application process can be time consuming and requires great attention to detail. To improve your chances of a successful outcome, connect with Ecosave for expert end-to-end guidance and assistance with your application.
